Information about built up or “tar and gravel” roofing systems and why they are so popular. Benefits, manufacturing method, and common applications.

Built-Up Roofing

Built-up roofing systems are a common type of low slope roof.

COMMON TYPES

  • Conventional
  • Inverted

MANUFACTURING METHOD

Asphalt is available in four types. As a product of the oil industry the different types are created using heat and blowing oxygen. Types one to four are used for different grades of roofing slopes. Type two and three are most common.

APPLICATION METHOD

Alternating layers of reinforcing plies of roofing felts bound with asphalt or bitumen are applied to build up the roofing system to the desired level of plies. In a conventional system, gravel or other surface material is then embedded into the top layer of asphalt. In an inverted system, the insulation and ballast protects the membrane. A surface coating can be applied to the roofs surface to help reduce UV effects and lower the buildings heating and cooling costs.

BENEFITS

  • Proven time-tested system
  • Very durable
  • Weather resistant
  • Easy to repair

Green Roofs are a new type of environmentally-friendly roofing solution that places soil and plants on top of a normal use. Often used for commercial buildings.

Green Roofing

Green roofing systems use soil and vegetation on top of an high quality roof system.

COMMON TYPES

  • Intensive
  • Extensive

DETAILS

Green roofing is a system of soil and vegetation applied above certain high quality roofing systems. Intensive green roof systems have thick soil mediums that can support a wide variety of plants and vegetation but often require regular maintenance. The deeper soil allows intensive systems to support larger plants, shrubs and even trees. Intensive system installations often require structural additions in order to support the added weight load.

Extensive green roof systems have soil mediums which are usually 6 inches or less. Extensive green roof systems often have drought tolerant plants and grasses as they are typically shallow rooted and require minimal maintenance.

The soil and vegetation of a green roof system have a natural cooling effect and provide added insulation, which results in lower energy costs.

Green roofing is an aesthetically pleasing way to increase the life of your roof membrane, and reduce traditional maintenance costs. Green Roof systems reduce storm water runoff, improve air quality, and reduce the heat island effect. For more information, view the Green Roofing page in our environmental roof solutions section.

What is a modified bitumen roof? Which type of buildings is it used on? What are the benefits of modified bitumen roofing?

Modified Bitumen Roofing

Modified Bitumen roofing systems are a durable, weather resistant type of low slope roof.

COMMON TYPES

  • SBS
  • APP

COMMON APPLICATIONS

  • Conventional
  • Inverted

MANUFACTURING METHOD

Modifiers are added to standard roofing asphalt to replace plasticizers removed during the distillation process. Bitumen is reinforced with fiberglass or polyester fiber matting in order to increase durability and strength.

The two most common types are SBS and APP. The use of SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) increases the flexibility of the membrane and allows it to have stronger expansion and contraction capabilities. APP (attactic polypropylene) increases the aging ability of the roof system. SBS is often the more popular system as the synthetic rubber additive increases the products flexibility.

APPLICATION METHOD

Modified bitumen roof systems can be installed with the common torch method, asphalts, or cold adhesives. A standard SBS modified bitumen roof system is a two-ply system applied in rolls that overlap the edge of the previous roll.

BENEFITS

  • Very durable
  • Weather resistant
  • Easy to repair
  • Factory manufactured rolls are easier to install and ensure quality control
  • Flexible, expands and contracts

Godfrey Roofing Inc. can repair or install modified bitumen roofs for clients in the Greater Ottawa region – please view the commercial roofing services and homeowners services sections for more detail.

What is a PVC Polyvinyl Chloride Roof? What are the benefits and applications of PVC roofing systems? Information & analysis on various PVC Roof topics.

PVC Roofing

PVC roofing systems are chemical resistant single ply membranes designed for low slope roofs.

COMMON APPLICATIONS

  • Single ply fully adhered
  • Mechanically fastened
  • Ballasted

MANUFACTURING METHOD

PVC membrane is begins formation when ethylene and chlorine are combined to produce a vinyl gas. The vinyl gas is converted into a fine powder that is then compounded. During the compounding process additives may be added to increase the durability, flexibility, and colour of the membrane.

APPLICATION METHOD

PVC membrane comes in rolls of various sizes and thicknesses. PVC roof membranes can be fully adhered, mechanically fastened, or ballasted. The rolls are bound together at the seams through heat welding.

BENEFITS

  • Strong puncture resistant material
  • Superior resistance to chemicals, chemical fumes, greases, acids, oils, and many kinds of fuels
  • UV resistant

Godfrey Roofing Inc is able repair or replace PVC roofing systems for Ottawa area client. Please view the commercial roofing services and homeowners services sections for more detail.

Roof Coatings are fluid-applied roof membranes that have elastic properties. They extend the life of a roof and are added to the existing roofing system.

Roof Coatings

Roof Coatings are elastic fluid applied membranes that improve a roof’s appearance.

Roof Coatings are aesthetically pleasing fluid applied roof membranes that have elastic properties. The elastic properties of roof coatings allow for expansion and contraction as a result of fluctuating temperatures. Roof coatings are applied as a waterproofing protection layer to a new or existing roofing system. Roof coatings extend the life of traditional roof systems and act as a protective membrane to physical damage, general wear and tear, and UV rays. The reflective characteristics can reflect heat and UV rays which can lower summertime cooling costs.

Godfrey Roofing Inc is a leader in environmental roofing solutions, and can apply or service roof coatings to your building. Please view the commercial roofing services and homeowners services sections for more detail.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of a shingle roof? How are shingles made and why would you choose them over other roofing systems?

Shingle Roofing

Shingles are a popular steep-slope roofing system.

COMMON TYPES

  • Fiberglass

MANUFACTURING METHOD

Fiberglass shingles are made from wet bonded fiberglass coated with a layer of asphalt that contains mineral fillers, which enhance the waterproof characteristics of the shingle. Architectural or laminate shingles are formed using two or more layers bonded with sealant and provide an aesthetically pleasing alternative to the traditional 3-tab shingle.

Fiberglass shingles have replaced organic shingles as the shingle of choice. Fiberglass shingles have a stronger fire resistance rating than organic shingles. The Under Writers Laboratories Test for Fire Resistance of Roof Covering Materials has rating classes of either A, B, or C. Fiberglass shingles are rated in category A, the highest rating class. Organic shingles, due to their paper composition, are rated in category C.

It is a common misconception due to the name that organic shingles are more environmentally friendly than fiberglass shingles. In actuality, organic shingles are worse for the environment as they are manufactured with a larger quantity of asphalt.

APPLICATION METHOD

Shingles are nailed in place by hand or with pressurized nail guns in overlapping rows from the bottom of the roof upwards. Each successive row is staggered and overlaps the joints of the row below. The roof peaks and edges are finished with shingle capping.

BENEFITS

  • Very durable
  • Available in wide variety of colours and styles
  • Strong product warranties available
  • Low maintenance costs

Godfrey Roofing Inc offers high quality fiberglass shingles to all clients in the Ottawa region. Please take a look at our residential roof replacement page to view standard shingle style & colour options, or request a free estimate for your shingle roof repairs or replacement.
